OVERLOOKING a picturesque valley with green fields and citrus groves is the grand hilltop fort of Rajgarh, the old capital of the Alwar rulers. Built by the founder of the dynasty, Pratap Singh, in the mid-18th century, its status as the capital was brief, and in 1775, when Pratap Singh captured Bala Qila, the court moved to Alwar. The fort, however, with its once beautiful Sheesh Mahal, frescoed walls and secret passages, was maintained as a summer residence, but over time, it fell into disuse until finally it was abandoned. The town, too, at the foot of the hill, wears a desolate look.
